How Retiraq came to be
Retiraq was founded in Georgetown, Penang, after a small group of colleagues noticed a recurring difficulty among people approaching retirement: not a shortage of information, but a difficulty in knowing which documents they held, where to find them, and how the official statements they received each year were structured. The problem was not knowledge — it was organisation.
The idea behind Retiraq was straightforward. Most households, by the time they reach retirement age, have accumulated years of contribution statements, nomination forms, identification copies, and insurance receipts. These documents are often stored in drawers, folders with no clear labels, or not stored at all. A one-day session with a clear system and a small group of people in similar circumstances, the founders reasoned, would be far more useful than any publication or online resource.
The literacy course grew out of a different but related observation. Many retirees in Malaysia have access to well-written official publications about EPF, SOCSO, and related programmes — but those publications assume a degree of familiarity with formatting conventions and terminology that not everyone has picked up. A weekly reading group, working through the same publicly available materials, turned out to be a comfortable way to close that gap.
Retiraq operates from a single, accessible premises on Lebuh Chulia in Georgetown. Courses and sessions are kept small. The approach is plain: we help you organise what you have, and we read with you what is publicly available. Nothing more, and nothing that resembles financial or legal advice.
Our Mission
To give every retiree in Penang a clear, labelled filing system for their household records and a comfortable familiarity with publicly available retirement information — at their own pace, in a small and welcoming group.
Our Scope
Retiraq is explicit about what it does and does not do. We organise, label, and read. We do not advise on individual circumstances, recommend financial products, or interpret documents on a person's behalf. Our sessions are educational and organisational only.

Norazlina Ahmad
Lead Session Facilitator
Norazlina has spent twelve years running adult literacy programmes in Penang. She leads the one-day records sessions and the six-week literacy course, and is known for her patient, methodical approach to explaining document formats.
Rajendran Chelliah
Records Organisation Specialist
Rajendran brings a background in archival and records management to the Retiraq couples programme. He conducts the initial in-home setup sessions and has helped over two hundred households build consistent filing structures.
Lim Wei Ling
Course Materials & Research
Wei Ling curates and updates all course reading materials, drawing exclusively from publicly available official publications. She ensures that what participants read reflects the most current publicly distributed version of each source document.

How we maintain quality across all sessions
Source verification
All materials used in the literacy course are drawn from named, publicly available official sources and are reviewed before each new course intake to confirm they remain current.
Session size limits
Group sessions are capped at eight participants. This is not a preference — it is a formal limit we enforce to ensure each person can work at their own pace.
Privacy during sessions
Participants are never asked to share personal document contents in a group setting. The records session is about building a filing structure, not reviewing account details with others present.
Scope clarity
Every session begins with a plain statement of what Retiraq does and does not do. Participants understand from the outset that organisational and educational activities are the full extent of the service.
Annual materials review
Course materials and the folder structures used in records sessions are reviewed annually. Where official sources have updated their publications, the corresponding session materials are updated to match.
Post-session feedback
Each participant is invited to provide written feedback after their session. This feedback is reviewed by the facilitation team and informs ongoing improvements to the session format.
Pension literacy and document organisation in Penang
Among the households that come to Retiraq, the most common starting point is not confusion about pension rules — it is the simple fact that documents have piled up in an undifferentiated way. EPF contribution histories sit in email, paper statements accumulate in files without labels, and nomination forms from years ago may or may not reflect current circumstances. The first step in any records work is knowing what you have and where it is.
The Retiraq sessions address this by treating document organisation as a practical household skill rather than a financial task. Labelling folders, building a personal records map, and understanding how an official EPF statement is laid out are activities that any household can carry out without engaging a financial adviser. The sessions simply provide a structured occasion and a small group of people doing the same work at the same time.
The six-session literacy course is aimed at participants who want to work through publicly available retirement literature with a discussion leader present. Malaysia's retirement system is described in considerable detail in freely available publications from EPF, KWAP, and SOCSO. Many retirees are aware these publications exist but have not read through them systematically. The course provides a weekly occasion to do so.
Retiraq is based on Lebuh Chulia in the UNESCO World Heritage Zone of Georgetown, Penang. The premises are accessible by public transport and on foot from the Penang ferry terminal. Sessions run during standard office hours, Monday to Friday, with Saturday morning slots available for the one-day records session.
